Dear Wife

I will try and write you a fiew lines to inform you where I am. We left Goldsboro the 10th. We had a verry hard march. We had 10 days rations to carry and it was warm and I was sick. I had no chance to send a letter after we got orders to move so I dident write. The last letter I wrote was the 7th. I was well then but I was taken that knight with a severe headache and fever. I was quite sick all that knight and the next day. I felt quite well Monday morning when we started but I had no appetit to eat. It was verry hard work for me to ceep up. We marched so fast but I cept along. The bottoms of my feet got verry sore. One of them blisterd and my head never ached harder. We arived here day before yesterday at Raleigh the capitol of NC. The army moved yesterday except the 20th corps. We had orders to go this morning but the order has ben countermanded. The report is that Johnson has surrenderd. I hope it is so. I am tired chasing him. He wont fight and there is no use for him to fight. It is a big thing for Grant to have Lee surrender his army to him. That is glorious news. I think the war is played. I am in hopes of getting home yet before haying. I dont think I ever will see another fight. I feele verry well to day but I have grown quite thin. I hope you are all enjoying good health. You must excuse this short letter. I have writen it on the jump. The postmaster is after the mail. Good buy dear Charlotte.

Sergt Charles Engle

I will write again soon if we stay here.
