March the 14 /65

Dear Wife

I am verry thankfull of this privelage once more. I havent heard from you in so long that I dont know wether you are dead or alive. You will learn by this that I am still numberd amung the living. I am well and have ben all the while since on the march. We are having quite a long campaign and I think a sucessfull one to. You will hear all about it in the papers. We crossed the Savannah River the 4th of February and I tell you we made old South Carolina sufer. Sherman moved a wide swath and a clean one. He burned the capitol to ashes and nearly every house we came to. Some part of S.C. is a verry fine country. We crossed the Cape Fear River yesterday at Fayetteville. Our men hold the river down to Wilmington and that gives us a chance to send a mail. We wont stay here but a day or two. We will go on to Goldsboro where we will have regular communications and a base of supplies and cloths which we nead verry much. It is about 60 miles to Goldsboro. If the campaign ends there it will make a march of nearly 500 miles. We have had very wet weather and some bad roads. I havent time to write much this time. I am verry anxious to hear from you. I hope we will get a mail here but I think not. We havent had but little fighting and I dont think we will have. Ceep up good spirits. Onely six months more and my time will be out. That will soone pass away. I sent you $100. Let me know if you got it or not. I want to see you all verry much. I wish I knew what you are doing to day. I hope you are all well. I must close. Write often and I will do the same when I can. My love to you. Good buy.

Charles
