Wensday March the 11 / 1863

Dear Charlotte

I received your letter Sadurday and was glad to hear that you were all well. I am well with the exception of a cold and headacke. I have put off writing until to day on account of a furlough. I applied for one last weak and it was made out and sent to head quarters. It should have ben here yesterday but something may turn up so that I wont get it and I thought I would write a fiew lines to you so as not have you looking for a letter and not get eney. I dont suppose you will get this untill Tuesday. I hope the furlough will come. I dont know but I am foolish for coming for so short a time. I cant stay onely 8 or 9 days. They are granted onely for ten days and it will take 5 days to go and come. We are alloud 3 days grace so I could stay 8 days. I want to see you and Matie so bad. I shal try and come this spring if I can. I received a letter from Rast Sadurday. He dont gain verry fast. He sead he could sit up in his bed. He has ben verry sick. I havent felt verry well since Sunday. I have got a bad cold. It is all in my head and it causes a hard headache. One of our boys had fitzs knight before last and last knight I set up with him. Knight before last it would take four of us to hold him when he had them. His name is Mory the noted gambeler. Mr. Loyd came here Sadurday. His son is sick with the tifoid fever. He is going to try and get a sick furlough for him as soone as he can move him. It is quite sickly here. The most of the boys have got a cold. It haint to be wandered at there is so meney suden changes in the weather. Our fourts are about finished. I havent ben at work this weak. I was detailed to go on picet this morning. I am now in camp. I shal stay in until after the mail comes in. I wont rite mouch this time. I shal write Sunday if I dont get the furlough.

This is from your affecunate husband.

C. Engle to Charlotte Engle

Ciss little Matie for me. My love to you and all.

Dear Charlotte

I have just received another letter from you and so I will write a little more. I have just ben to see the Capt to find out about my furlough. He seas it may be in the regt now but there is 3 or 4 gone that have stayed their time and the collnel wont let eney more go until they come back so I cant tell just when I can come. I am afraid they will shut down on furloughs if they dont come on time but I am in hopes to get mine before long. You stated in your letter that you wanted me to come. I shal try hard but it is a real job to get a furlough but I guess I will make out to get one. I shall have to stop writing. I have got to go back to my picet post. It is three miles from camp. If I dont get a furlough it wont be my fault. No more so good buy.
