Dear Wife

I rect your letter of the 18th in due time and was glad to hear that you were all well but it is strange about Wm. I hope he will get well soone. George Perkins started yesterday for home on a 30 day furlough. He lives in Owego but he is going to Binghamton. He told me he would bring me some socks. I told him I would have you take them to Reeds Hotel so you had better do them up and take them there as soone as you can. The weather is warm and dry. It is verry smoky. I think there is fighting going on somewhere. I guess we will slip out of this fight. General Slocomb visited our camp yesterday. Tell Mr Batcher that the dead have all ben taken up at and about Chatanooga and buried in a cemertry at Chatanooga. James had nothing in his knapsack but one shirt. It was a white one he brought from home. He had a ruber and tent cloth. I raped his woolen blanket around him. Someone stole his ruber and shirt. They see the knapsack was cut and knew it belonged to a dead man. They was taken before daylight while I was helping to build breastworks. He had his overcoat on. I am sorry about the things I sent by Sage. He seas he left them to the American. I hope they will get them yet. I dont see why you dont get my letters. I hope you have got some before now. I write twice and three times a weak and I want you to. It seams old Hungford is as mean as ever. You had better not have eneything to do with him. He is a perfect old copperhead. You say you are going to Bartons. I hope you will have a good visit. I think you will. I wish I was home to go with you. I want to see you and the children the worst way. I want to see father and mother verry much. They are getting old but I hope to see them again. I want to see all the folks verry much. I hope this cruel war wont last much longer. We buried another one of the 137th to day. He belonged in Co G. It is quite sickly here now. We would all be healthier to march and change camps. Andrews and Hazard got their box yesterday. They got a nice lot of butter and dried fruit. We are living pretty well. I dont hardly know what to send Matie. I have got a comb I dont nead. I will send that. I shal have to close for this time. Write often. Kiss the children often for me. Good buy dear Charlotte.
